Produce List for Tuesday December 5

Posted 12/1/2017 12:28pm by Natalie Kujala.

Taylor’s fingers are typing to you today. At the end of January, I am taking an evening ceramics class at Juniata College. I am already so excited for it. As I am sitting here thinking about it, I started to wonder how I could link it to agriculture. I started looking through the research papers regarding the intertwining of these subjects. My evening reading has been decided. I will have to ask our growers if they are taking any classes this winter. I have been getting plenty of emails about the conferences coming up this winter, which there are plenty of, with lots on panels and forums.

HIGHLIGHTS:

SCORZONERA (Black Salsify): It has returned. This is coming from the family farmers of Sunny Ridge Farm in Path Valley, PA. I really need to take a case of this home so that I can practice with them. It would bring a smile to my face if someone would purchase a case, prepare them, and then tag us on Instagram. I would rather learn from you all then looking up recipes and uses by myself.

BABY SPINACH: These leaves are finally exploding! Hares Valley Growers, Village Acres Farm, and Help From Above Farm all grow these babies beautifully for the coop. I just learned that during the First World War, wine fortified with spinach juice was given to French soldiers who had experienced hemorrhages. Would you drink this now?

SCARLET TURNIPS: I have been looking for ways to use these beauties in my kitchen. I am on a Miso kick recently, so I found a recipe that combines both the scarlet turnips and miso (with a few other herbs and alliums).

CITRUS: Meyer lemons and Hamlin oranges are back. They are already going quickly, so please let us know as soon as you can if you would like to order some of these beauties. At the end of the summer, I had a wonderful cucumber and Meyer lemon juice. I am already looking forward to spring cucumbers so that I can make this refreshing juice!

GREENS: For next week’s deliveries, we are bringing in bunched green kale, lacinato kale, and collards from ECO in Durham, NC where the bunched greens are still going strong. The bunched lacinato kale and collards are in limited supply, so please let us know early if you would like either of these.

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
