For Tuesday September 19th

Posted 9/15/2017 11:23am by Natalie Kujala.

Okay, so we’ve been hearing that some pretty wet greens went out last week, and there were some quality issues at the customer level. We really appreciate the feeback, and have passed this along to the growers who are addressing the concerns at the farm level. A few new growers were trialing greens last week, and like all new things, there’s been a bit of a learning curve. We are happy to offer credit for reasonable product issues, and want to make sure you get the freshest, highest quality produce from us. Thank you as always for supporting our family farms.

HIGHLIGHTS :

BOSC PEARS: Bosc pears are unique in shape and color, with their elongated necks and rounded base, and cinnamon coloring, also known as russeting. Russeting is a natural process, and does not affect the quality of the fruit even if it appears inconsistent. Bosc pears make delicious additions to sandwiches, salads, oatmeals, and even pizzas!

SWEET POTATOES: Probably my single favorite vegetable, sweet potatoes are a key part of my fall/winter diet. Last year I grew my own sweet potatoes, and was eating them 1-3 times per day (a little aggressive maybe- but I love them!). Needless to say, I am VERY excited to see sweet potatoes back on the list.

KIWI BERRIES: These little gems get another round of shout-outs as we won’t have ‘em for long! Native to Japan, Korea, Siberia, and Northern China, Pennsylvania is one of the few domestic states to grow these adorable little poppers. Kiwi Berry Organics in Danville is supplying us with these, “no fuzz, no peel” traditional kiwifruit cousins, and we are as excited as you are! Though I know it sounds crazy, kiwi berries are most flavorful when they become slightly wrinkled and lose that bright green color. It may try your patience to wait, but the taste is definitely worth it.

RED CHERRY TOMATOES: We received a surprise offer of red cherry tomatoes for Tuesday delivery, and we will actually have a decent number of cases available. Other cherry tomatoes varieties are scarce, so get these little guys while you can!

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
