Availability List for Tuesday September 5th

Posted 9/1/2017 1:55pm by Natalie Kujala.

My goodness. What the heck happened to August?! It’s September, it’s crisp out, and I’m craving apple pie and sweet potatoes. But wait! That old crazy weatherman is telling me to hold my horses; summer isn’t over yet. Warm weather will be back in just a few short days, tomatoes and melons are still coming out of the fields, and green zucchini is back on our list! There is still time to make those favorite summer dishes, like watermelon salad, which I just can’t get enough of.

REMINDER: We will have regular business hours next Monday (Labor Day), as well as, the rest of the week.

HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS:  BASIL: As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, though I’m not particularly in agreement with this. I’d much prefer to see the good things, like basil, stick around. Our basil did have a pretty darn good run this year though. The downy mildew set in late for most of our growers, allowing us to offer basil until the end of August. Unfortunately though, the DM has descended, and it has sunk its necrotic teeth into our basil crops. I hope everyone preemptively made and froze some pesto!

WATERMELONS: Despite the frequent heavy rains this summer, our watermelons did okay. The peak has definitely passed, but we do still have small quantities of yellow seedless (new to the list!) and sugar baby melons, and still decent quantities of red seedless watermelons. Watermelons have one foot halfway out the door, so stock up now!

GREENS: These cools nights are doing wonders for our greens. The lettuce mixes in particular are exploding. Our sweet and spicy salad mix is jonesing to be in your coolers, storefronts, kitchens, and bellies! We are offering 1.5lb and 5lb cases again. If you’re looking for 20+ pounds, please let us know early and we can work a little deal magic for you.

SUNRISE SALAD MIX:  New to the list is the Sunrise Salad Mix which has a little bit of everything, and is named for the farm from which it originates. The grower sent us a sample to test out, and it got my seal of approval! If you’d like more details on the specifics of this mix, just ask!

TOMATOES: Though our cherry tomatoes and heirlooms have slowed down significantly, our red field and plum tomatoes are having a “field day”! We have red tomatoes available in all sizes. My favorite size tomatoes? The jumbos!

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
