Availability List For Friday August 11

Posted 8/8/2017 12:12pm by Natalie Kujala.

Howdy, Taylor writing today. This weekend, I think I am making a trip out to the beach on the New Jersey coastline, but it is not set in stone yet. Not many people in the farming business have a chance to take a break in August. Hopefully, our growers take a break when they can! This year, August has given us very strange weather. This week in particular, is cool for this time of year. I am not even sure if I want to go swimming in the lake. I broke my swimming streak this past weekend, and I am not sure when I will pick it up again. We talk about the weather a lot here, but it has so much to do with our line of work.

A quick reminder from Emily: Recently, we’ve had several instances of produce being rejected upon delivery, not due to quality, but because of over-ordering. These returned cases most often go to waste, which means the grower doesn’t get paid for their hard work. Going forward, we will be assessing a $5 fee to any returned case that does not have evident quality concerns. Please take care when ordering and thanks for your attention to this issue.

HIGHLIGHTS:

WILD CHANTERELLES: Don Lake, of Lakewood Farms, has found some chanterelles for us. They are foraged from the wooded property of Don Lake, who is one of our member growers (so these wild treats are organic)!

BLUE OYSTER MUSHROOMS: These blue beauties come from Don Lake, of Lakewood Farms. What he does not sell through us, he sells in a very cute roadside stand. He has been growing mushrooms for many years. These stand alone very well or make an excellent addition to a mushroom medley.

SHIITAKES (LOG-GROWN):  These are also coming from Don Lake, of Lakewood Farms. If you have not seen a picture of how these grow, please look them up. It is quite a sight. To me, it looks like something from Mario Kart.

BABY LEEKS: We are now offering baby leeks in both 5-pound and 10-pound cases. We would love to see how you use these on Instagram! This vegetable is part of one of my favorite jokes: what vegetable is a sailor’s worst enemy? (a leek)

WHITE & RED POTATOES: The new potatoes are coming from Sam Ramer, in Shippensburg, PA. His wife recently had a baby. Sam and his wife now have seven girls and four boys. Whenever Sam brings us produce, he always brings a few of his kids. They are so adorable (the potatoes are too!).

FINGERLING POTATOES:  Our fingerlings are coming from Peachey’s Farmacy, in Reedsville, PA. These are so easy to work into your meals. They barely have a skin, so there is no need to use your peeler.

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK.   PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
