For Tuesday August 8th

Posted 8/4/2017 12:47pm by Natalie Kujala.

Mother Nature has an interesting sense of humor sometimes. Just when it seemed like the weather was cooperating for our summer crops, the skies dumped 2 inches of rain in 30 minutes on several of our growers’ fields. Some even saw hail. I don’t think I need to tell you that this is not ideal. No, not good at all, especially at a peak ripening time for melons and tomatoes. Fingers crossed our growers won’t experience huge losses, as that would create disappointment all around.

A quick note from Emily: Recently, we’ve had several instances of produce being rejected upon delivery, not due to quality, but because of over-ordering. These returned cases most often go to waste, which means the grower doesn’t get paid for their hard work. Going forward, we will be assessing a $5 fee to any returned case that does not have evident quality concerns. Please take care when ordering and thanks for your attention to this issue.

LOWLIGHT:

SUMMER SQUASH: Well, it sounds like summer squash hasn’t quite rebounded from its unfortunate lull. We are hoping to have steadier numbers by Friday’s delivery, but we will again be limited for Tuesday.

HIGHLIGHTS:

MELONS: Alright, gear up for cookouts, picnics, and watermelon seed spitting contests, because we are officially experiencing WATERMELON MANIA over here! One of our growers generously sent in some melons yesterday for the office to sample, and let me tell you were they deeeeelicious! I think we all had at least 4 pieces.

BABY LEEKS: Limestone Acres Farm has done an impressive job growing these challenging alliums. I love the mild flavor of leeks, and I appreciate the manageability of the baby crop- they fit so perfectly on my cutting board. We currently have a 3-case discount on these little guys.

PEPPERS: We are now seeing impressive pepper offers from our growers, particularly of green and purple bells. We have lowered the case prices of both of these quite a bit over the last week so see more movement. The purple peppers have been absolutely beautiful, and when prepped raw maintain their glossy hue. My personal favorite: stuffed green peppers!

GREEN CABBAGE: Our small-head green cabbage grower would really like to see more of these moving off of his farm and into your stores and restaurants. Therefore, we are dropping the price to an almost unbelievable low. I priced them, but I still did a double take! Cabbage rolls anyone?

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
