Here at TOG we have quite a unique group of growers. It may be difficult to perceive commonalities with only a quick scan of a board meeting; but, once you tune an ear and listen in, you begin to discern the ways in which our growers are connected. Audrey Fisher-Pedersen of Bending Bridge Farm summed us up pretty darn well:  “I think what makes TOG unique and awesome is that we are a diverse group of people united by common values and mission. A motley crew. We're quirky people. Our produce is specialty and unique. TOG blazed the organic co-op trail 30 years ago at the end of a bumpy dirt road and we're all still doing our own funky thing, carrying on traditions, representing integrity, grit, and plain good food. We only offer one product (fresh produce), but we do it damn well as a result of our commitment to focusing exclusively on what we know and love.”  And, to our motley crew of mothers, stepmothers, and grandmothers to yours, Happy Mother’s Day!

HIGHLIGHTS:

SPRING GARLIC: Yesterday I brought home some spring garlic. By the time I got to my house, my car was filled with a slight, pleasant fragrance. I am a big fan of alliums in general, but I love the mild flavor of spring garlic.

WHITE SCALLIONS: I’m sure most of us are familiar with French onion soup, but have you tried spring onion soup? I had never even considered this as an option, but this green, seasonal soup is a wonderful alternative to the traditional version.

BARESE CHARD HEADS: Tim Derstine of Hares Valley Growers showed me a vegetable I had not seen before. When he presented it, I thought it was a new kind of bok choi. It turned out it was a head of Barese chard. Barese chard is known for its particularly tender and crisp leaves, which I can attest to having tasted it. If you’re looking for a new spin on chard, I’d highly recommend trying Barese heads.

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK.   PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
