For Tuesday May 9th

Posted 5/5/2017 11:37am by Natalie Kujala.

I (Taylor) know that we talk about the weather a lot here, but I must mention it again. We got a lot of rain last night. The road to the co-op has been turned into a stream! In the long run, I guess we do need it! We have a few exciting things on the horizon. Some of our growers will be offering strawberries and red hothouse tomatoes in the coming sales days. They are not here yet, but they are coming very soon! Mother Nature has definitely been good to us this spring.   Please take a look at the plants we are offering, which can be seen at the end of the availability list. Again, plant orders can be placed until 3PM on Monday. Then we will deliver your plants on either Thursday or Friday, which we will verify as soon as possible.

HIGHLIGHTS:

CARROTS: Our growers are starting to reach the end of their storage carrots. After these carrots leave our coolers, we will not have carrots until the end of June. Yesterday, I saw some of the baby maroon carrots and they look so adorable. I know adorable and carrots do not normally go together, but now they do! Our carrot quantities are definitely starting to dwindle some, but we will have more as the spring and summer progress.

WILD WATERCRESS: This item definitely deserves its time in the sun. This wild aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial plant is coming from Gary Lambert, the owner of Lambert Mountain Acres! These plants grow in the stream that passes through his organic farm. When they are ready, he puts on waders, so that he can wade through the stream to harvest the watercress above the waterline. It is quite a sight.

BABY GREENS: We are getting many options for baby greens, such as a variety of kales, lettuce heads, and purple mizuna. We do have some lettuce mixes, but making your own mix is an option. We would love to see your green uses on Instagram!

SCALLIONS: These can definitely speak for themselves. We do have both red and white scallions. I just learned how to make scallion pancakes, which are more like a tortilla. It is a much better spoon for my love of hummus than those store bought breads or chips.

NON-ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL LOCAL CHICKEN EGGS: AVAILABLE IN MEDIUM, LARGE AND EXTRA-LARGE, 15 DOZEN BULK. PLEASE CALL TIM DERSTINE AT HARES VALLEY GROWERS AT 814 448 2784 FOR GREAT EGG PRICES.
